Our guest did leave the majority of a glass of wine; last year I would have necked that without thinking twice. Last night I thought about it a lot - but I left it.

I actually put a couple of beers in the fridge to chill last night; but was so engrossed in American Horror Story (and feeling a bit headache-y) that I didn't drink them.
Plus, I was thinking that I've not had a drink for so long, it would be wrong in some way to end that now. Strange. I think I have built it up in some way and made it important when it shouldn't be.
Or, maybe it should be important? Maybe I should be considering very carefully whether or not to drink, and my default approach should be 'no'? There is a checklist of questions for a process at work, and one of the questions is' why not?'. I think that's where I've been going wrong in my drinking thinking - I've asked 'why not' and shrugged my shoulders and opened the bottle, i.e. I haven't thought about it properly. Maybe those should be my questions to myself before having a drink in future:

That's 100 days sober. Quite the milestone. I've managed pretty well, I think. Yes, there have been some occasions where it's been tough, and it has been a little uncomfortable talking about it, but I've done it. 100 days sober. I still look at the bottles of Isle of Jura every time I go into the Co-Op, but I pass over the wine selection. I still feel inadequate at house parties and business functions, and would like to be able to hide in a bottle, but I've not done it.

I think it's unlikely I'll get to 200 days , but you never know.

It's strange; although I'm full of cold and probably would be less likely to drink anyway, I was sitting catching up on the last series of True Blood, and thinking about drinking. But I wasn't wanting alcohol, it was like I was a separate person observing myself and noticing that there was a lack of alcohol. It was like playing 'spot the difference' with myself from three months ago, and circling the missing wine glass. So I was thinking about booze but not wanting it. A bit weird.

But at least I got to remember what happened in the plot, and didn't spend £14 on wine. And Lafayette's outfit for Terry's funeral was a sight to behold...

... and that makes it two months. Attended a lovely dinner party with some good friends and didn't feel uncomfortable at all about not drinking. They all got tipsy and later conversations were a bit one-sided - those who were drunk really wanted to talk :)  but I was relaxed they were relaxed and I think it was a great success.

It's been 58 days since I had an alcoholic drink. As I come to the 60 day mark, it's actually been quite easy. I've been jealous of others at the two parties I've been to, and I was probably on edge and not relaxed. But we've had people drinking in the house and that's not been an issue. We're heading round to friends tonight for dinner and I'm not expecting that to be difficult - in fact, I'm quite looking forward to it.

In other news, my predictive text keyboard now suggests 'no' 'booze' as the first thing I might want to write when typing.

As we get to the end of Feb, I'm quite pleased with what I've achieved. Nearly two months without a drink, and it's fairly straightforward explaining to people that I just don't want a drink; that I was drinking too much before Christmas.
No-one has asked 'ooh, are you an alcoholic?', or 'were you worried about becoming an alcoholic?'
Maybe that's a sign of the times, we all know that we  drink too much, it's just difficult to acknowledge it.
Alcoholism is a dirty word that people are afraid to use; that way lies sherry for breakfast and homelessness.

I didn't think, a month ago, that I would be able to manage a whole month. But here we are. And I was only twitchy a couple of days. She says I'm better company, but I feel like I've been a grouch. But then I'm no judge, I've been ripped to the tits on booze for the last three years - and those are just the ones I've been counting.

Well, less than a week to go until the end of the month, and it's been okay without alcohol. A little dull, but okay.
Can I keep this up indefinitely? I think now is the sort of time I was worried about, when I've shown I can do it; it would be easy now to slip into a mode of 'just having one' and before you know it, be back up to a bottle of wine a night. Let's see how it goes...

I watched two episodes of the new series, The Tomorrow People, a Veep and the latest Charlie Brooker's Weekly Wipe. Despite my heroic efforts, with the PVR set to record The Voice (not my choice) and The Bridge II (not her choice), I'm sure there will be less space available to fill up with episodes of Neighbours (more a habit than a choice).

T the Tomorrow People looks like quite a good idea. It's a remake of a UK series from the 1980s,when SFX weren't so good. I remember reading the books, but I don't think I watched the show. Of course, transposing it to the US means everyone is good-looking, but you know, that is just the way things are in the US.

Yesterday was a long day; we had a morning of shopping in Chichester. And then there were some setbacks with the car. By the end of the day I was quite despondent, and would normally have had a skinful. As it was I had a headache and was super-tired. We even made it to bed a few minutes early (although not as early as I had planned).

Yesterday was the hardest day so far this year. Not so much because there was no booze, but because she was out, leaving me in charge of three bored children in crap weather with no car and no interest in entertaining them. By about three p.m. I could have done with a long cool swig of something.

But, I didn't. I stayed fast and made it through. Hopefully there won't be too many more days like that before Summer is here...

I was talking to a friend yesterday about AA. Because my concern is that I will continue without alcohol and then in two or three months look back and say to myself that hey, it's not difficult to abstain; look, I've been doing it. So a beer or two tonight won't hurt... And then (slowly over time) I'll sink back to where I was, drinking every night for no reason. I think that will be the next difficult stage. At that point I might need help from somewhere, and it might be worthwhile tapping into the expertise and support which the AA offers.

Taking that step and contacting them is a biggie; that means admitting to others that I have a problem I can't handle by myself.

Well, we'll see how that goes.

A bit tricky tonight; she was out and I felt I should be doing something other than I was - i.e., drinking.
Instead I stayed in and watched The Walking Dead, and drank a new flavour of herbal tea (chamomile and spearmint, if anyone is going to keep track). That's how I roll.

I suppose it's habit as much as anything else. There were times I was at work and I'd promise myself that, for that evening at least, I wouldn't drink. But then I'd walk through the front door holding a bottle of wine or some beers. And I'd wonder how that happened. If I can not fall back into that mindset, I might be half the way there.

It was a bit of a struggle looking at some very alluring decanters filled with smooth red wine, but I figured that if I drank it I'd only end up drunk. I don't think I was salivating about the taste of the wine, I was thinking about the effects that the wine would have, eventually.
